Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT is now used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The therapy is based on the concept of dialectics, which is the idea that two seemingly contradictory ideas can both be true at the same time. In DBT, this means that the therapist works with the individual to find a balance between acceptance and change.

DBT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions, particularly those involving difficulties with emotion regulation and impulse control. It is a structured and comprehensive approach to treatment that provides individuals with the skills and strategies they need to manage their emotions, improve their relationships, and lead a more fulfilling life.
